It’s only natural to eventually see lines and wrinkles start to form on your forehead, in between your eyebrows, around your eyes, and in many more areas due to aging, expressiveness, and environmental factors. It is also natural, in response, to try and smooth these intruders away by any means necessary. Xeomin® (zee-oh-min) Aesthetic is an injectable neuromodulator, comparable to Botox® Cosmetic, that can polish away these wrinkles and help you reel in the inner you. It is a brand that capitalizes on the idea that it is not selfish or superficial to care about your look and empowers the notion of self-care.

At Lavande Spa, we pride ourselves on be able to help you achieve the look that you want at any cost.

WHAT IS XEOMIN®?

Xeomin® (incobotulinumtoxinA) is an alternative botulinum toxin product to Botox® and Dysport®. It is a neurotoxin comprised of a purified protein of the clostridium botulinum bacterium, that when injected can relax muscle movements and reduce and/or prevent the appearance of overlying lines and wrinkles. This medication is a safe and effective temporary solution to the issue of aging.

HOW DOES XEOMIN® WORK?

Xeomin® is made to treat dynamic lines (those that are made visible via muscle contraction and facial expression) and not static lines* (those that are indented into the skin and visible without expression). This is because Xeomin® is injected into facial muscles and works by temporarily diminishing the mobility of treated muscles; it does not fill out lines or wrinkles. It is injected in small doses with fine needles by our experienced staff, and any given area could have a number of injection sites. Once muscles become relaxed and unable to contract due to Xeomin® acting on nerve impulses, your skin will appear smooth, supple, and refreshed.

*Other treatments are available to smooth out static lines as well although Xeomin® treatment can prevent them from becoming more prominent.

WHAT ARE THE CREDENTIALS OF XEOMIN®?

The cosmetic usage of Xeomin® brand to temporarily treat moderate to severe facial wrinkles (namely, glabellar lines) was approved by the FDA (Food and Drug Administration) in 2011. This approval was based on the positive results of 2 clinical trials that proved the efficacy of Xeomin®.

WHO’S A CANDIDATE, AND WHAT AREAS CAN BE TREATED?

Almost anyone is eligible to receive Xeomin® treatments, which is why we here at Lavande Spa encourage you to come in for a consultation today to see how you may benefit from Xeomin®. Your identity in the world deserves to be as radiant as you are on the inside.

Clients as young as 18 years of age and as old as 80 years and beyond are welcome to come in and reap the benefits of Xeomin®. People always assume that being young automatically translates into having beautiful skin that should not be uselessly treated with Xeomin® and/or similar treatments; however, there are many young people that communicate expressively, or simply want to maintain their lovely skin and prevent signs of aging to come. It is highly recommended to start treatment early for the purpose of prevention, because it is ultimately more expensive to make lines and wrinkles go away than it would be to stop them in their tracks. Although predominantly sought after by women, Xeomin® treatment is a powerfully effective treatment for men as well.

Naturally, there are a few health limitations and contraindications for getting Xeomin® treatment. Treatment is not recommended for women who are pregnant and/or breastfeeding, clients with neuromuscular diseases, clients with a present illness (even as benign as a cold), clients with infection in the injection sites, clients taking certain medications, clients that plan on getting a facial in the near future, etc. It is important to discuss your health history with our providers to ensure Xeomin® is the appropriate treatment for you.

Xeomin® can be injected in many areas beyond the originally approved glabellar lines. It can be injected in

  • Forehead (standard, above the brows)
  • Glabellar (between the eyebrows, frown lines)
  • Lateral eye (crows feet, sides of eyes)
  • Bunny lines (upper/sides of nose lines)
  • Upper lip (to help gummy smiles, lip flip, smooth vertical lips lines)
  • Nose (slight lift in tip of nose)
  • Chin (smooth chin wrinkles)
  • Platysmal bands (lines on the neck)
  • Jaw (helps with TMJ, can slim face)
  • Palms (for sweating)
  • Underarms (for sweating)

WHEN WILL I SEE MY XEOMIN® RESULTS?

Treatment will not yield results instantly, so it is important to be patient. For most people initial onset will be visible in less than a week, probably around 3-5 days after treatment. Full onset will be visible in less than 2 weeks, in about 10-14 days, and it is in this time that a touchup is recommended to those who might need one. The clinical study identified the maximum effect as occurring about a month after Xeomin® treatment. Some clients might be lucky enough to experience and earlier initial onset, and some might experience a later onset – it is a unique experience for everyone, and results will vary.

HOW LONG WILL MY XEOMIN® LAST?

Clinical trials determined the typical duration of Xeomin® treatment to be about 3 months, on average lasting for 2-4 months for most participants. Results can last for significantly longer or shorter than this average depending on the individual, so results will absolutely vary. It is important to have realistic expectations for results.

Longevity is affected by a number of factors – for example, clients who are more active will likely go through the material faster than others. It is important to establish a regular regimen for neuromod treatment in order to extend longevity, because the more treatments you get the more your muscles will weaken and the longer the medication will last.

HOW LONG DOES A XEOMIN® TREATMENT TAKE?

Here at Lavande Spa, we will book a 30 minute appointment for clients to get their Xeomin® injections. The actual process of injection will only take about 10-15 minutes or quicker; it is quick enough to be called a “lunchtime” procedure, clients can stroll in and out without significant impact on their day. However, we feel it is necessary to dedicate more time to our clients to ensure there is ample time for complete and detailed assessment and answering of any questions.

HOW MUCH XEOMIN® DO I NEED?

Xeomin® is measured in units, and the number of units you need will be prescribed by our experienced staff after they have had the opportunity to study your facial anatomy and musculature. Many factors will be considered when formulating your recommendation such as the strength of your muscles (the stronger the muscle, the more units will be needed to relax it), the aesthetic goals you are trying to fulfill (do you want to look natural? frozen?), and more. Thus, the recommended number of units will vary per individual and treatment plans will be tailored to your needs; however, it is important to have realistic expectations for Xeomin® treatment. For reference, the average number of units that is injected in a treatment would be between 20-50 units, but it could be more or less depending on your needs.

Regular Xeomin® treatments that follow a specialized regimen will allow clients to get the most out of results and eventually get less units. As you get more treatments, your muscles will atrophy and weaken more, and therefore you will need less units Xeomin® to achieve the same result in future appointments.

WILL I LOOK PLASTIC OR FROZEN?

One of the most common concerns that people have when considering neuromod treatments is that they will look unnatural following treatment, either by looking plastic or looking frozen. Injection of a product such as Xeomin® is dependent on dosage and provider technique, and it is possible to give clients the frozen or plastic look if they wish to achieve that, but it is also possible to give clients a natural and youthful look. Our skilled and experienced RNs are able to block muscle movements in various degrees, making it so that the muscle will still have a limited mobility or so that the muscle has no mobility at all. At Lavande, we are dedicated to helping you achieve your own beauty goals.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

The puncture of the fine needles under the hand of our gentle RNs has been reported to feel like a slight pinch, but no intense pain has been associated to treatment. Discomfort, if any, will generally be slight and brief. Due to the fact that Xeomin® injection is expected to be tolerable our providers will not provide topical anesthetic, but they will provide a cold pack prior to injection in order to slightly numbing targeted areas with the cold. For clients that are worried about injection pain, they are more than welcome to apply numbing cream at home or come in earlier to purchase our in-house numbing cream for application.

The only preparation that is recommended before Xeomin® is to discontinue taking bloodthinners or anti-inflammatory medications (this includes alcoholic drinks, Vitamin E, Fish Oil, Ibuprofen, Advil, Aspirin, Flax Seed Oil, etc.) about 24-48 hours before treatment. This will reduce the risk of swelling, bruising, or bleeding from injection. To avoid the risk of fainting, it is recommended not to come in for treatment with an empty stomach; please have a snack beforehand.

Clients will be able to resume daily activities immediately following Xeomin® treatment, because there is little to no recovery time post injection. There might be slight protrusions and redness at the injection sites, but these usually subside either immediately after treatment, or up to 30 minutes afterwards. It is recommended to do facial exercises after treatment so the medication can flow in the muscles more quickly.

While there is no downtime, clients need to be aware of certain limitations after getting Xeomin®. Clients should stay upright for about 4 hours after treatment to avoid migrating the Xeomin® elsewhere; they should also avoid exercise and strenuous physical activity for 24 hours after treatment to avoid having Xeomin® wear-off prematurely. Further, clients should not get facial treatments or massages for up to 10-14 days after treatment, or until injections settle.

Simply, the answer is yes – it is highly recommended to stay consistent in getting Xeomin® about every 3 months or so. There are a few reasons for this. (1) If you stop getting treatment or only get it once, your lines/wrinkles will revert back to the way they originally looked. (2) If the lines/wrinkles revert back to their natural state, that means resumed repetitive facial muscle contractions will cause these lines/wrinkles to worsen over time, and continue to make your muscles stronger along with deepening the lines. (3) If your muscles get stronger, the next time you return for Xeomin® you will probably need more units than you got the previous time in order to relax these newly strengthened muscles, which will be more expensive for you. (4) If your muscles are strong and unacquainted with the material, the Botox® will probably not last as long as it would have otherwise.

Our knowledgeable providers here at Lavande Spa can sit down with you and create a regimen that is right for you in order to make sure you achieve and maintain that flawless skin you’re looking for. After repeated treatments, treated muscles will eventually atrophy and become weaker, which will allow you to inject less units for a longer period of time while maintaining your skin.

Xeomin® Aesthetic is manufactured and sold by pharmaceutical conglomerate Merz, and as it is a one of a kind brand. However, there are many botulinum toxin products out there and it may be difficult to differentiate if what you are getting is authentic Xeomin® or not. Any business that is selling the true product can be found in the Merz provider directory online and more likely than not will be participating in Merz’s Xperience rewards program. Lavande Spa will both be found in the directory, and is a part of the Xperience Program.

Lavande Spa also offers alternative botulinum toxin products, Botox® and Dysport®, to temporarily reduce the appearance of moderate to severe facial wrinkles. We encourage clients to familiarize themselves with all the options that are out there in order to make an informed decision about which product is best for them. All 3 products are made from the same key ingredient, the botulinum toxin, all 3 are proven safe and effective, all 3 last about the same amount of time, and all 3 will be similar in terms of cost.

Side effects may or may not be experienced following Xeomin® treatment, but are not abnormal. Normal side effects include discomfort at injection sites, redness, swelling, inflammation, itching, headache, loss of strength, neck pain, tiredness, dry mouth, dry eyes, droopy eyelids/eyebrows, blurred vision, and others. Please contact us here at Lavande Spa if you have any concerns about side effects.
